Elvis Presly was the first person to bring rock ‘n roll to America. After Elvis brought this new style of music to America many other talented singers decided to as well. One of these groups or “bands” called The Beach Boys, were widely popular, and still are to this day. The reason they were so popular is because they tackled new subjects that so far others had not, such as, drugs, free sex, black rights, and so forth. Soon others also started to tackle these types of themes.
Two bands from the 1960’s, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, both came to America from Great Britain. They were the two most known and loved bands of their time. The Beatles started out as clean cut, and fresh boys, but by the end of their career they had changed drastically into druggies and rough men. The Rolling Stones however started out and ended up druggies. These two bands were each other’s biggest competition.
Kids during the counterculture of the 1960’s were looking for an escape, which they found through drugs, sex, getting out of reponsibility, and the new rock and roll music. During this time the kids didn’t know what hardship was, they were all in good positions with money and food, so they didn’t want to have to have responsibility. They wanted to escape from having to do hard things in life, they wanted to run away from their problems and try to find themselves.
Though the government tried to stop the movement of the counterculture by putting laws and restrictions on drugs and other problems during this time, the counterculture naturally collapsed around 1973.
The counterculture was not a very good time in American history, for many reasons, though it did give us the rock ‘n roll style of music we all love.
